Recent Capital Gains Tax Changes
As of 2021, the distinction between someone owning an investment for more than 1 year qualifies them to declare gains (and losses) as long-term capital gains. Conversely, if an investment is held less than 1 year, are considered short-term capital gains and losses.
Short- vs. Long-Term Tax Rates
Short-term capital gains are charged as the same rate as ordinary income. Long-term capital gains rates range from 0%-20% depending upon income levels. The 0% rate individual incomes up to $40,400 or $80,800 for a married couple filing jointly. The 15% rate individual incomes from $40,401 to $445,800 or from $80,801 to $501,600 for a married couple filing jointly. The 20% rate individual incomes above to $445,800 or above $501,600 for a married couple filing jointly.
