The Stock & Bond Markets - Drum Roll Please
With the upcoming election, anything can happen. That said, the rally from earlier in the year appears to have run out of steam. The trade deficit just hit the second highest level in years, oil is trading at record highs causing consumers to spend their money on fuel, not other products (other than Apple iPods). And corporate earnings disappointments continue to abound. Diversifying is more important now than ever - you never know when the next Vioxx-type ball will be dropped on unsuspecting investors. For bond investors worried about inflation, an alternative to the typical fixed rate bond would be Treasury Inflation Protected Securities (TIPS) which have the inflation rate (3-5%) added to the value annually.

Real Estate Bubble Burst - Part 3
While we've been wrong (early?) on this call, we also know it gives our readers pleasure to say "I told you so - real estate is the only sure thing." The median home sells for 2 times the occupant's income but in fast growing metropolitan markets it's higher - 3.3 times income in Boston, 4.2 times in San Francisco and 5.2 times in San Diego. Banks now own 45% of our homes and, in a rising interest rate environment, adjustable rate mortgages are up to 32% of all loans in 2004 vs. 19% in 2003. You do the math but, as they say, if something can't go on forever, it won't.

    The Bottom Line
This is where we provide the performance of our conservative, moderate and aggressive portfolios and compare these to the S&P 500 and NASDAQ Indexes. While they are an important consideration, performance is only a portion of the evaluation investors should consider when evaluating investment management. Other considerations include the risk taken to generate the returns, the quality of the service, the reasonableness of the fees and, more important now than ever, the integrity of the investment manager.
