On June 25th at 7:30 am, I will be speaking at the Santa Barbara Chamber of Commerce offices - you're invited! The topics to be covered include investment management (both personal and for those of you who either have or oversee retirement plans) and wealth management strategies including tax and estate planning. There will be plenty of time for questions and answers. Please call 965-3023 for reservations to attend this free workshop.
The stock market appears to be in a trading range, meaning that there seem to be good days or weeks followed by declining days or weeks and then by rising ones. A major trend does not appear to be established given the conflicting data - good earnings and jobs reports but fear of inflation and a consumer rapidly running out of gas (or one not able to afford gas). As for the bond market, fund manager and bond guru Bill Gross who manages the world's largest bond fund (over $60 billion) believes rates are likely to rise hurting both bondholders and the real estate market increases we have gotten used to for increasing our net worth or providing a ready source of cash through refinancing. He claims Greenspan is not acting boldly but instead "taking baby steps" to head off inflation - he was recently quoted as saying it was time for Greenspan to "call a cab for speculators" and double the Federal Funds rate from the historical low of 1% to a more reasonable 2% level given the current level of economic activity. Real estate appears to be slowing its ascent but is likely to have a "soft" landing according to Harvard's Joint Center for Housing Studies. The theory is that construction is in line with long-term growth rather than at a speculative level and a strengthening economy and job growth should limit the bubble-bursting scenario described by many. On the other hand, the same study says real estate could be in for a "rougher ride" if interest rates rise (as Bill Gross expects) or job growth falters.

| The Bottom Line |
 |
| This is where we provide the performance of our conservative, moderate and aggressive portfolios and compare these to the S&P 500 and NASDAQ Indexes. While they are an important consideration, performance is only a portion of the evaluation investors should consider when evaluating investment management. Other considerations include the risk taken to generate the returns, the quality of the service, the reasonableness of the fees and, more important now than ever, the integrity of the investment manager.
