The Stock & Bond Markets -
August gains were a welcome relief to investors. The S&P 500 is now up 5% for the year and the NASDAQ is finally even (not just for 2006 but also from the beginning of 1999 through the end of August 2006). The economy is offering mixed signals - slowing of course will mean an end to interest rate rises (good for bonds) and lower inflation but it also means slower earnings growth (hence the management shake up at Ford and a 10% cut in Intel's employee base). And there's the uncertainty of the November elections. Still, if the "trend is your friend," then more gains are an increasing possibility by year-end.

CELEBRATING 26 YEARS
Since 1980, I have been providing financial advice to investors and I'm proud to say that our service and performance (see "Bottom Line" section on the right) continue to be superior to the market and our peers. Thanks for your support.

Real Estate Bubble? -
Is it the time to refinance or lock in a line of credit? If housing prices are to decline, then this may be the time to lock into a fixed rate mortgage or get approved for a line of credit before prices go down and the amount you can borrow decreases or the banks tighten their standards and make a change cost prohibitive. The tea leaves are now front page news - housing inventory has tripled in some places while sales are down as much as 50%. Prices have begun to decrease (or "adjust" as they say in the real estate market) and it's better to be in the front of the line than the back. Remember the clock is ticking so any changes you are planning should be made sooner rather than later.

    Private Investments vs. Publicly-Traded Investments

Alternative investment vehicles such as hedge funds and private equity are often offered exclusively to high- net-worth individuals. In fact, it is the high-net-worth investor for whom this type of investment is best suited. Most alternative investments are structured as private limited partnerships open to no more than 100 accredited investors but the financial services industry has attempted to further democratize this type of investing ...

Federal and state estate and gift taxes (55% maximum), together with the generation-skipping transfer tax (GSTT) on transfers to persons two or more generations younger at a flat rate of 55%, combined with income taxes imposed over the years, can reduce the value of the business that a family can retain through the generations to an amount as low as 12 percent of the initial value. However, strategies to avoid this include ...

    The Bottom Line
This is where we provide the performance of our conservative, moderate and aggressive portfolios and compare these to the S&P 500 and NASDAQ Indexes. While they are an important consideration, performance is only a portion of the evaluation investors should consider when evaluating investment management. Other considerations include the risk taken to generate the returns, the quality of the service, the reasonableness of the fees and, more important now than ever, the integrity of the investment manager.
